After Carnival, Festas Juninas (June Festivals) are the biggest and most beloved celebrations in Brazil! Although celebrated nationwide, the festival is exceptionally massive and vibrant in the Northeast region. Throughout June, Brazil lights up with bonfires, lively music, traditional foods, and colors everywhere. 🥁✨

1. The Corn Festival: Flavors of June 🌽🍰
June is corn harvest season in Brazil, making it the absolute star of June cuisine. Almost all traditional foods are made from corn:
Bolo de milho (Corn cake) 🍰
Canjica and Pamonha (sweet, creamy corn puddings/wraps) 🥣
Pipoca (popcorn) and classic roasted corn on the cob. 🌽🔥
On June 23rd (St. John's Eve), families keep the tradition of lighting a fogueira (bonfire) in the street. It is around the fire that people gather to chat, roast corn, dance, and celebrate!

2. Traditional Outfits: The "Caipira" Style 🧑🌾👗
The dress code for Festas Juninas is a tribute to country life in the interior of Brazil (the caipira or sertanejo style).
Women: Wear colorful, swirling dresses full of ruffles and ribbons, which add beautiful movement to the dance. They also typically wear their hair in braids and paint freckles on their cheeks.
Men: Wear plaid shirts (camisas xadrez), patched pants, and the essential straw hat (chapéu de palha).
3. The Quadrilhas: The Country Wedding Dance 💃🤵♂️
The Quadrilha is the official dance of the June Festivals. Interestingly, it originated from the ballroom dances of the Paris court (the Quadrille) and was brought to Brazil by colonizers.
Over time, Brazilians gave this dance a completely new identity, turning it into a giant, funny enactment of a country wedding (casamento caipira). There is always a noivo e noiva (groom and bride), a priest, and even a sheriff!
Couples dance to the rhythm of Forró and traditional Sertanejo music. Today, quadrilha groups hold massive competitions with complex choreographies that attract tourists from all over the world!
