If you’ve ever traveled around Brazil or talked to Brazilians, you’ve probably heard: “Aceita Pix?” or “Faz um Pix para mim!”

1. What is PIX? 🤔
PIX is an instant money transfer system. It works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (including holidays and weekends), and the money reaches the recipient’s account within just a few seconds.
The best part? For individuals, it’s completely free!
2. Essential PIX Vocabulary 📚
Chave Pix (Pix Key): This is the identifier for your bank account. Instead of providing all your banking details (branch, account number, CPF, full name), you only need to share your “key.” It can be:
Your CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas – Brazil’s individual taxpayer identification number)
Your email address
Your phone number 📱
A random key (a sequence of letters and numbers designed to protect your privacy)
Fazer um Pix: This is the verb we use when talking about transferring money through the system.“Vou fazer um Pix para você pagar o almoço.”“I’ll send you a Pix so you can pay for lunch.”
Cair na conta (to hit your account): An expression used to confirm that the money has arrived.“O Pix já caiu na conta!”“The Pix has already hit the account!”
QR Code: Very common in stores, restaurants, and even with street vendors. You just need to open your bank app, point your phone’s camera at the code, and confirm the payment.

3. A Cultural Thing 🇧🇷✨
PIX has become so popular that it has transcended the financial world. Today, it’s part of Brazilian culture and humor:
“Fazer um Pix” as a sign of affection: It’s common to joke with friends or partners by saying: “Se você me ama, faz um Pix!” — “If you love me, send me a Pix!” 😂
Accessibility: From the beach to a taxi, from a fancy restaurant to a street popcorn vendor, almost everyone in Brazil accepts PIX. It’s almost impossible to find a place that doesn’t use it.
Now that you’ve mastered the vocabulary, you’re ready for your next trip to Brazil without having to carry cash in your pocket!
