Bumba Meu Boi Legend

The legend says that on a colonial farm in Maranhão, two workers lived: Pai Francisco and his wife, Mãe Catirina.

Catirina was pregnant (grávida) and, one day, she had an uncontrollable craving: to eat the tongue (língua) of the farm’s most beautiful bull—which happened to be the boss's (patrão) favorite animal.

To please his beloved wife and protect the baby, Pai Francisco did the unthinkable: in the middle of the night, he stole and killed (matou) the bull to cook its tongue.

When the farm owner discovered the tragedy, he became furious (furioso), extremely angry, and ordered his men to capture Francisco. Desperate to save himself and fix his mistake, Pai Francisco asked for help from healers and indigenous shamans (pajés).

After rituals, drumbeats, and prayers, a miracle happened: the bull resurrected (ressuscitou) and started to dance! 🕺🐂

The boss was deeply moved by the magic and joy of the animal and forgave (perdoou) the couple. The entire farm joined together in a massive celebration, giving birth to the tradition that repeats every year in the nights of Maranhão.
