🇩🇪 The World’s Biggest German Festival Starts Today in Brazil!
The world’s largest German festival begins today (Oct 8) in Brazil, always following the celebration in Munich, Germany. The Brazilian version of Oktoberfest turns 40 this year and will take place in Blumenau (Santa Catarina) from October 8 to 26.

At Brazil’s Oktoberfest, you’ll find everything you expect: plenty of beer or draft beer (chopp), traditional German band music, and people dressed in typical costumes — the Dirndl for women and the Lederhosen for men. The tradition of toasting with “Prosit!” (Cheers!) is also kept alive.
🥨 Sauerkraut and Cuca: A German Menu with a Brazilian Twist (foods in Oktoberfest)
The German influence on Brazilian cuisine is delicious and goes far beyond beer. The gastronomy of the southern colonies is pure comfort food.
Savory Dishes: The famous sauerkraut (fermented cabbage, in German Sauerkraut) is served with sausages (salsichão) or pork knuckle (Eisbein). It’s a hearty dish, perfect for the cooler southern climate.
Sweets and Breads: The most famous sweet from this heritage is cuca — the Brazilian version of the German Kuchen. It’s a soft cake topped with a crunchy crumb layer, often made with fruits (like banana or apple) or creamy fillings.
🏡 The German Route: Cities That Feel Like Europe
If you want to experience Germany without leaving Brazil, visit these southern cities! They preserve German architecture and traditions beautifully.
Blumenau (Santa Catarina): The Brazilian capital of beer and Oktoberfest. Its half-timbered houses (enxaimel architecture) make you feel like you’re in Bavaria.
Pomerode (Santa Catarina): Known as the most German city in Brazil. It’s a place where you can still hear older locals speaking German dialects, like Pommerisch.
Gramado (Rio Grande do Sul): Famous for its cool weather, this tourist town blends German and Italian influences in its architecture and offers a rich gastronomic experience.
